Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. James 4:7
What does it mean to submit to God? It means to be obedient to His Word. To be in compliance with what the Word is saying. Inorder to do that, we must have a made up mind.
When we first give our lives to Christ, all we really know at that point is that we are sick and tired of being sick and tired. We are desperate for change, have tried all we know, and are now ready to try Jesus. Sounds familiar? Nervertheless, we give our life to Him, seeking guidance as to what we are to do next. It is only until we start learning of who He is and what is expected of us that we really decide if we are going to continue in our new found life or not. We have to purpose in our hearts to commit and submit to God. For it is only through this committment and submission that our lives are changed for the better.
In the above scripture, we are told to submit ourselves to God. Often times when the word submit comes up, our flesh will immediately go into defence mode. We get this look on our face as if to say, "I don't think so!" That's because the flesh has done what it has wanted to do for so long, that it doesn't want to change, neither does it feels the need to. However, your soul is in desperate need of a change which is why you gave your life to Christ in the first place.
I tell people all the time, entering salvation is one thing, walking in it is another; this is where the work comes in. You need to understand that you have now entered into spiritual warfare. Once you decide and commit to obeying the Word of God, the war within begins. What the Word of God says you are to do vs. what you are use to doing; good vs. evil. But with the help of the Holy Spirit, you can be the overcomer that Jesus say we are. You just have to submit yourself to God; to studying His Word. You have to develop a relationship with Him by spending time with Him(fellowship). It is very important to get involve with a bible based church, attend Sunday School, Bible Study on a regular basis. Become involved in church activites. The more time you spend learning about Jesus, doing what He did (serving others), you will find that not only is submitting to God not what you thought it would be, but you will be having the best time of your life! But the only way to know this, is to do this!!
Obey them that have rule over you, and submit yourselves: for they watch for your souls, as they that must give account, that they may do it with joy, and not with grief: for that is unprofitable for you. Hebrews 13:17
