Therefore all things whatsoever ye would that men should do to you, do ye even so to them: for this is the law and the prophets. Matthew 7:12
Are you living by The Golden Rule? Are you treating people the way you want to be treated? Or are you requiring people to treat you in a manner that you are not willing to do in return?
It's funny how something that we heard all the time, whether at home or at school, can be found in the Bible. Not only that, it is spoken to us by Jesus himself. Therefore, you don't have to debate if whether or not the author of book said it because whatever Jesus said is in red.
Why do you think Jesus told us to treat people according to the way we want to be treated? I think it is because inorder for us to be able to follow His commandment-love thy neighbor as thyself, we have to have a clear picture of what that exactly means inorder to obey. Also if we are aware of how we feel when things happen to us that we don't like, we will be more empathetic to others, as well as have compassion for one another; which in turn will keep us from being judgemental toward others.
I live my life treating people the way I want to be treated even though I don't always get that in return. In the beginning of my Christianity, I could not understand how people could spend so much time in church, hearing the Word of God, and have so much discord among them. Then it came across the pulpit one day that everyone that goes to church aren't saved nor are they trying to be, and those that confess to be saved aren't saved just because they say it; you have to live it-everyday, 24 hrs.7 days a week. It was like a light bulb went off in my head. I had gotten a revelation that would help me do what God will have me to do. A revelation that would help me stay focus on my Christian walk, and do the right thing when those around me weren't. You know what, it also allowed me to have patience with those who didn't understand the life they could have if they decided to follow Christ. I also learned that people act toward situations the way they have programmed their minds to respond. And if they don't know of an alternate way to respond, how can they respond differently?
Romans 12:1-2 says, "I BESEECH you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service. And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God." If a person will not allow the Word of God to transformed them(for whatever reason), he or she can not experience that which comes from allowing the Word to operated in our lives. Therefore, they remain stuck in the same rut, handling situations the same way they always have, and getting the same results. Until they come into the knowledge of the Word of God, an apply it to their daily lives, will they stop operating in their flesh, and operate through the Spirit of God.
Romans 8:8-9, So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God. But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his.
